The decline of work ethic from parenting to employment

06:00

I went to a place of business the other day and when I walked through the front door I saw a sign on the door saying help wanted. Later on when I was getting my food stuff, I had a conversation with the employee that worked there and we were talking about the fact that it's hard to find somebody that will do the work and come to work on time. It's hard to find an employee that will do the work and come to work on time. That's all they're asking for them to do, two things, come to work on time and do what you're supposed to do, do what you're paid to do.

They have a hard time finding somebody to do the work and I know that there's a problem hiring people because I have a friend that has a restaurant and about four years ago they changed from a regular sit-down restaurant to catering only because they could not find employees to work in the restaurant. Servers couldn't find any and if you drive around and you go to different places look at all the help wanted signs that are on restaurants. They're all over the place.

So we start off with the fact that there was a help wanted sign then we carried over to the fact that they have a hard time finding people to do the work and to show up on time. And I remember I looked at this job application back in 2008 and the job basically said we're gonna pay you X amount per hour but if you show up for work 60 days on time we will immediately raise you to give you a 50 cents per hour raise. 60 days, two months, just show up on time for two months and then we're gonna get automatically give you a raise and this was in 2008. So getting people to show up on time has been an ongoing problem. To me that's called doing what you're supposed to do. It's an ongoing problem.

But I was also at the same time as I was getting my food I talked to a food delivery person and they talked about how much food people order. Lots of orders. There this person delivers a lot of food like a Grubhub kind of thing DoorDash kind of thing. I don't remember the name of the company and they replaced their income just by doing food delivery. And I asked them how can you order so much food or how can people order so much food? And this person said to me well they have multiple kids and them and their husband everybody may want something different. So they'll do a food delivery where each kid has ordered from a different place. The husband will order from somewhere different and the wife will order from somewhere different.

Now mind you none of these were baby boomers. I'm a baby boomer. The way I was raised was you ate whatever was cooked or you did not eat. I mean if you have allergies or you can't eat it it's different. But you didn't have all these choices. It wasn't about choices. And it wasn't because they could not do it. It wasn't because they could not afford it. It was because the values you were being taught was you eat what everybody else is eating.

So I go back to the baby boomer how we were raised. Then I'm going to this general general parenting and participation trophies and all this stuff about letting kids do what they want to do. We went through a generation you've been letting them do what they want to do. Even the fact of ordering what you want instead of eating what everybody else is eating.to get what they want when they want it and then wondering why they won't come to a job and do what they're supposed to do. Why won't they do what they're supposed to do? Because they don't want to do it. And if you were raised to do what you want and get what you want, how can you suddenly start doing it on a job?
